Floor Model

Daniel Stroh & Rex Morris

curated by Imogen Brent

October 10 – November 9

Press Release

Kaleidoscope is pleased to present Floor Model, a two-person exhibition by artists Rex Morris and Daniel Stroh, whose practices explore the byproducts of industrial systems and the aesthetic potential of functional obsolescence. Daniel Stroh collects utilitarian objects - engineered forms born from necessity- and reconfigures them into lamps. Stroh’s practice revitalizes the overlooked architectures that surround and support the objects we use. His work reimagines the forms designed not to be seen but to protect, stabilize, or deliver; foam inserts, die-cut cardboards, molded shells, and rigid casings that are cast off the moment the object they cradle is revealed. The result is a quiet but insistent challenge to the object’s intended lifecycle: a lateral shift in function. Rex Morris, in contrast, builds machines that suggest purpose without ever fulfilling it. They employ the design language of tools that suggest precision and efficiency—only to subvert that logic entirely, prioritizing noise and entropy over control and order. Their sound sculptures resemble tools of industrial process, complete with motors, arms, and pulleys, yet their motions are banal. They move simply to move, producing sound for its own sake, inverting the fundamental logic of utility. Together, Stroh and Morris present a show that addresses the aesthetics of the overlooked and the misused; objects and machines that have slipped through the cracks of their intended roles. Floor Model invites us to look at what’s left behind when function fades, and to consider what flourishes on the margins of utility. Floor Model, presenting new and recent works by Daniel Stroh & Rex Morris, will be on view through November 9.
